How can I make the rhodium plating on my white gold ring last longer?
My fiancee bought me an 18k white gold engagement ring 10 months ago and now the white rodium plating has almost completely rubbed off. I first noticed a yellow tinge about 4 months ago, but now it is obvious the entire ring is yellow. It is in great condition other than this. Yellow gold turns my fingers black, always has done. the ring was fine until the yellow started coming through, now my ring finger and surrounding areas are turning black. I know rhodium plating should last apprx 2 years on a white gold ring. Am wondering if there is a link between the fact my skin reacts poorly to yellow gold and this rhodium rubbing off so quickly. Should I just go into a jeweler and have the re-plate it? Will it rub off again within a few months?
Rhodium plating actually lasts about 6-12 months on average for most people until the yellow starts showing up again. It’s completely normal for it to rub off, however I understand if you feel like it’s going to be a hassle to keep re-plating them, but that is just the nature of “white” gold. So don’t think it’s your skin that’s causing the rhodium to rub off! :] It’s all normal.
